WES Learning Rain Garden

Fall Service Project

Our scouts in partnership with Girls Scouts Troop 2010 had the opportunity to give back to our charter school by participating in the Center for Green Schools national event Green Apple Day of Service by installing a learning rain garden.  Many local businesses donated time and materials to make this project happen along with our 75 volunteers including our very own scouts and Akelas.

We are proud of our young scouts as they were engaged and worked hard until the project was complete. We even had a state representative stop by to present a resolution recognizing Green Apple Day of Service and our project.

The rain garden was designed and installed as an interactive learning environment for the elementary schools students.  It will collect and filter storm water runoff from the playground reducing or eliminating the runoff going into our storm sewers and rivers.  The students can walk through and sit to see and touch the native plants as they attract beneficial wildlife to give them a small touch of nature.
